Siteri Namere Nanovo’s remarkable achievement as the dux of Saint Thomas High School in Lautoka serves as a powerful inspiration for many. At just 18 years old, she has faced numerous challenges that diverge significantly from the more straightforward paths of many of her classmates, who often had strong familial support around them.
Since her primary school days, Ms. Nanovo has balanced her studies with household duties, including preparing meals for her family before heading off to school. Raised alongside her five siblings by their dedicated father, Ratu Sela Vunakasi Nanovo, who works in construction, Ms. Nanovo has carried the weight of responsibility on her shoulders from a young age.
“This dux trophy is for my Ratu,” she expressed with gratitude, reflecting on her father’s unwavering commitment to their education and well-being. After their mother left when she was young, Ms. Nanovo’s determination to pursue higher education intensified. She pledged to work hard and attain a university degree, aiming to secure a brighter future for herself and to repay her father for the sacrifices he has made.
Living in Natabua, within walking distance of her school, Ms. Nanovo shares her experience of family life, where all four sisters contribute to chores and help their younger siblings with preparations for school. She recognizes her father’s dual role as both a mother and father. His dedication has been a continuous source of inspiration, urging her to strive for excellence in her education.
“We face hardship together as a family, but he always encourages us to endure because good things lay ahead of us,” she noted. She credits her success to God’s strength, which has guided her in managing her time effectively and focusing on her studies.
Ms. Nanovo is setting her sights on further education, planning to pursue a law degree at the University of Fiji next year, signaling a hopeful journey ahead.
