A former worker at Grace Road Church (GRC) has come forward with alarming allegations of physical abuse by supervisors. This individual, a Korean American who spent eight years associated with the church, described her experiences as akin to “slavery” and revealed that workers are subjected to severe beatings, referred to as “thrashings”, as punishment for disobedience or mistakes.

According to the woman, the church teaches that these thrashings are a method of spiritual correction intended to bring members back to God. She reported being struck on her legs with long wooden sticks, experiencing intense pain, and even enduring group attacks where multiple people would hit and kick her simultaneously. The atmosphere she described is intimidating, with such beatings deemed as displaying resistance against God.

One significant incident she described involved her receiving a thrashing for questioning a supervisor about the necessity of a late-night task that prevented her from seeing her young daughter. After displaying disappointment about being late to see her child, she suffered physical punishment that left her in genuine fear for her health, pondering if she might have sustained a concussion.

The former worker has taken steps to report her experiences to the Human Trafficking Unit of the Fiji Police Force, which is now investigating the matter. In addition to seeking justice, she is also attempting to reunite with her two children, aged four and 13, who remain on the church’s farm in Navua.

As of now, the church has not responded to the inquiries regarding these grave allegations. This incident sheds light on the broader issues of workers’ rights and the need for protective measures for individuals in all institutions. It serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of accountability and support for those who speak out against abuse.

With investigations underway, there is hope that this public revelation may lead to crucial changes within GRC and broader reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of all workers in similar environments. Advocating for protection and support systems could help prevent such situations in the future, encouraging a culture that valorizes dignity and respect over fear.
