The commission investigating the tragic death of boxer Ubayd Haider is expected to provide a significant update today, as confirmed by chairman Edwin Wainiqolo. Currently, the inquiry has interviewed all local individuals associated with the bout, including the three referees involved and Haider’s family. Notably, promoter Freddy Chand has yet to be interviewed.
Wainiqolo stated that a formal announcement will follow once all necessary interviews are concluded. He emphasized that both the promoter and financier are crucial figures in this investigation, and he is hopeful that the final report date will be established soon.
The press conference will take place at the Ministry of Youth and Sports office in Nadi at 10 am. This comes after Haider suffered a collapse following his ninth-round TKO loss against Sydney’s Runqi Zhou during the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title fight on October 26. After being transported to Zen’s Medical, he was later transferred for head surgery but tragically did not recover and passed away on November 10. Haider’s burial took place on November 12 at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu.
His passing marks a somber occurrence in the boxing community, as he is the fourth Fijian boxer to lose his life due to head injuries sustained in the ring.
This investigation highlights the ongoing need for safety measures within combat sports, reminding us that while the thrill of competition is vital, the well-being of athletes must always be prioritized. The development of the inquiry and its findings could serve as a catalyst for policy changes that enhance athlete safety, fostering a more secure environment for future bouts.
