Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Nancy Tikoisuva and Deputy DPP John Rabuku are scheduled to testify today before the Commission of Inquiry (COI), which is investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). They will be joined by former Minister for Forests and Fisheries Kalivati Ravu and Semi Koroilavesau, who have also been summoned to provide their testimonies.

The COI, led by Supreme Court Justice David Aston-Lewis, is tasked with examining whether Malimali’s appointment in September complied with legal standards and was free from any improper or unlawful influences. The inquiry will scrutinize any potential vested interests that may have affected the appointment process, particularly concerning ongoing FICAC investigations that involve high-profile individuals such as Members of Parliament and senior public servants.

Tanya Waqanika, a lawyer based in Suva, is representing Malimali during these proceedings. The COI anticipates submitting its final report to both the President and the Prime Minister by the end of January.

This inquiry represents a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in Fiji’s governance. By closely examining the integrity of public office appointments, it reinforces the commitment to maintaining credibility in institutions like FICAC. The outcomes of these hearings could pave the way for essential reforms, fostering a brighter future characterized by ethical standards in public service.

In summary, the ongoing inquiry is critically assessing the legitimacy of Commissioner Malimali’s appointment, focusing on accountability in governance. This process is crucial in highlighting the importance of maintaining ethical practices within governmental structures, offering a hopeful outlook for improving public trust and confidence in Fiji’s governance.
