Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed agreement with Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry regarding the need for Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) commissioner Barbara Malimali to step aside during an inquiry into her appointment. Rabuka stated, “I agree,” emphasizing the necessity for the Director of Public Prosecutions to address a report that Malimali should have prepared prior to her termination as acting commissioner of FICAC.
In a bid to restore trust, Rabuka announced the imminent establishment of a board of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding Malimali’s resignation from the Electoral Commission and her subsequent appointment as commissioner. He noted the prevailing questions regarding the integrity of the appointment process and indicated that a thorough investigation was needed.
Chaudhry welcomed Rabuka’s decision to set up the inquiry, praising his efforts to address the issues at FICAC, which have caused public concern. He insisted that Malimali’s stepping aside was essential for the inquiry to proceed without hindrance. Chaudhry also stressed the importance of ensuring that the inquiry remains independent, involving members without ties to the parties involved in the situation.
