Two members of the Commission of Inquiry investigating the death of boxer Ubayed Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, have stepped down from their positions. The resignations were confirmed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. Pita Driti, former Land Force Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, and Adi Narayan, chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji, both cited reasons for their departures, with Driti noting a conflict of interest.
Narayan expressed his commitment to the integrity of the inquiry, stating, “I hope for it to be transparent and completely independent of their findings.” He acknowledged that he had initiated the committee but felt it necessary to excuse himself to maintain clarity in the investigation. Saukuru clarified that the investigation’s integrity must be preserved, hence Narayan’s removal due to his current role in the boxing commission.
The inquiry team is still finalizing plans, with the current members being Philip Eneriko, the director for Youth and Sports, and Edwin Wainiqolo, a lawyer from Lautoka. The third member is expected to be appointed soon. This inquiry is crucial as Haider collapsed during an IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title fight on October 26 and tragically passed away following emergency surgery.
In a positive note for the boxing community, Narayan revealed that several promoters, including Bluewater Boxing Promotions, have renewed their licenses for the upcoming year. He announced that plans for the first of multiple promotions will be made public in December, signaling a continued commitment to the sport despite recent events.
This inquiry and the ongoing support for boxing events indicate a path forward, as the boxing community looks to honor Haider’s legacy by ensuring the sport remains safe and vibrant.
