Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his agreement with Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry regarding the need for Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) commissioner Barbara Malimali to step down during an inquiry into her appointment.
“I agree,” Mr. Rabuka stated. He highlighted that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) should review the ‘Out Report’ from Pulewai, which should have been prepared prior to her dismissal as acting commissioner of FICAC.
He previously announced that a board of inquiry would be established soon to address the distrust surrounding Ms. Malimali’s transition from the Electoral Commission to her current role as commissioner.
Mr. Rabuka noted that there are numerous questions regarding Ms. Malimali’s resignation and subsequent appointment, emphasizing the necessity for a thorough investigation to uphold the integrity of the process.
In response, Mr. Chaudhry welcomed Mr. Rabuka’s decision to form a board of inquiry, stating that the Prime Minister has the backing of the public in his efforts to “flush out the rot” at FICAC, a situation that has shocked the nation.
“It is only appropriate for Ms. Malimali to step aside to allow the inquiry to proceed without hindrance,” added Mr. Chaudhry. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that the inquiry remains independent, consisting of members who have no ties to the individuals involved or those connected to the decision-making process.
