Inquiry into FICAC: A Step Toward Transparency or a Political Maneuver?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that a Commission of Inquiry is the most suitable and objective method to investigate claims surrounding the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

In response to an interview with foreign media by former Acting Deputy FICAC Commissioner Francis Pulewai, Rabuka noted that an independent commission would be better equipped to handle the concerns raised, especially those relating to alleged ministerial interference in FICAC investigations.

“If such an inquiry finds that there was indeed undue interference, the due process recommended by the Commission of Inquiry will need to be followed,” said Rabuka.

He emphasized that there have been no modifications to the laws governing FICAC and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to upholding the law.

Regarding allegations that Pulewai had faced threats, the Prime Minister condemned any such threats, should they have occurred. He clarified that he had not been informed of any threats, nor had they been reported to him or to the Fiji Police.
