Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Nancy Tikoisuva and Deputy DPP John Rabuku will be appearing today before the Commission of Inquiry (COI) that is investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Former Minister for Forests and Fisheries Kalivati Ravu and Semi Koroilavesau have also been summoned to testify.

The COI, led by Supreme Court Justice David Aston-Lewis, is examining whether Malimali’s appointment in September was conducted according to the law and free from any improper or unlawful influences. Investigators are particularly focused on identifying any vested interests that may have swayed the appointment process, especially concerning ongoing FICAC investigations involving high-profile government officials, including Members of Parliament and senior public servants.

Tanya Waqanika, a Suva-based lawyer, is representing Malimali during this comprehensive inquiry. A final report from the Commission is anticipated to be presented to both the President and the Prime Minister by the end of January.

This inquiry is crucial as it brings to light significant issues surrounding the integrity of public service appointments in Fiji. It emphasizes the importance of accountability and transparency in governance, which are essential for restoring public confidence in governmental operations. As the proceedings unfold, there is a hopeful outlook that the findings will instigate necessary reforms, fostering a culture of ethical standards within public service.

In summary, the COI aims to critically assess the legitimacy of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali’s appointment, focusing on the influence of potential vested interests and setting the stage for enhancing integrity in Fiji’s governance framework.
