Chief Justice Salesi Temo was recently seen at the site of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) as it entered its fourth day at the Old Parliament Complex in Veiuto, Suva. The inquiry is focused on the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Malimali assumed her position on September 5, 2024, but her appointment has raised concerns among political commentators and Opposition Members of Parliament regarding the legality and integrity of the procedure that led to her selection.

When approached for comments, Justice Temo remarked, “Probably they have changed the schedule; I’ll have to be informed later.” He is expected to testify before the COI tomorrow. The inquiry has seen deviations from its planned schedule, as many of the 35 witnesses have provided in-depth testimonies.

This inquiry reflects the importance of accountability and transparency within governmental processes, especially concerning positions that deal with corruption. As the COI progresses, it is hopeful that clarity and justice will emerge from the proceedings, reinforcing public trust in the institutions aimed at combating corruption in Fiji.
