Inquiry Demanded: Allegations of Ministerial Interference Shake Fijian Governance

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to conduct an Independent Inquiry into allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in the agency’s operations.

In a statement, Seruiratu expressed concern over these allegations, emphasizing the need for resolution. He supported the Prime Minister’s call for an investigation, stating, “To ensure fairness, transparency, and good governance, I propose establishing this Commission of Inquiry after this week’s parliamentary sitting.”

He suggested that the Commission could include judicial officers, Members of Parliament, and esteemed legal professionals from the private sector, provided they are not involved in any ongoing investigations. It is crucial, he noted, that members of the Commission remain impartial and free of conflicts of interest related to the issues at hand.

Seruiratu described the allegations as serious, asserting they strike at the core of good governance and democracy. He also encouraged the former Deputy Commissioner to come forward to clarify her claims and asserted that those accused should have an opportunity to defend themselves.

“We are at a crossroads for our beloved nation,” Seruiratu stated, “and as elected representatives of the people of Fiji, we must do our utmost to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work diligently to restore public trust.”
