Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his support for the Prime Minister’s proposal to create a board of inquiry into the ongoing situation with the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Mr. Seruiratu believes that the establishment of this inquiry is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the Government and addressing the concerns surrounding the matter.
During a media briefing, Mr. Seruiratu stated that forming a board of inquiry is a necessary step. He pointed out his previous advocacy for such measures during the Lynda Tabuya case, where he personally reached out to the Office of the Prime Minister, emphasizing that the Prime Minister, as head of Government, ultimately holds responsibility for governmental issues, including those related to FICAC and Barbara Malimali.
He highlighted that a board of inquiry would not only serve to restore faith in the Prime Minister’s Office but would also benefit the individuals implicated. Mr. Seruiratu also reiterated the importance of including women in leadership roles, indicating that it is vital to eliminate gender discrimination, while still following established protocols and procedures.
When asked if an inquiry could compromise the Judicial Services Commission’s integrity, he recognized the difficulties faced by such institutions. He stressed that following established systems and principles of good governance is essential to maintaining public trust.
Mr. Seruiratu concluded by expressing hope that the Prime Minister will keep his promise and initiate an inquiry into these ongoing issues.
