The Fiji Development Bank (FDB) and the Public Rental Board (PRB) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at launching a comprehensive housing revitalisation strategy. This collaborative initiative focuses on enhancing homeownership and elevating living standards, with an emphasis on inclusive housing developments nationwide.
In their joint statement, both organizations highlighted the significance of this partnership in targeting one of Fiji’s most pressing social challenges: affordable housing. They expressed confidence that this collaboration would yield unique and tangible solutions that the nation has not seen before.
While specific details of the plan are yet to be disclosed, the two entities have described their partnership as a united effort to confront Fiji’s increasing housing shortage, particularly for low- and middle-income families. The joint strategy also aims to attract private investment into affordable housing projects.
FDB’s CEO, Filimone Waqabaca, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to fostering national development by improving the socio-economic well-being of communities through accessible financial services. He stated, “With FDB providing the capital and PRB delivering the on-the-ground expertise, this partnership bridges the gap between financial access and real home ownership outcomes for everyday Fijians.”
PRB’s general manager, Timoci Naleba, acknowledged the urgent need for improved living conditions and housing availability for low- and middle-income earners. He emphasized that this collaboration offers a viable path for many Fijians, particularly informal workers, to realize their dreams of owning a home.
The initiative aligns with other government measures to promote affordable housing, including financial assistance and grants for families, addressing historical concerns related to housing availability. Previous efforts have included the government’s allocation of funds to legalize informal settlements, improve essential services, and support family relocations to secure homes for many vulnerable residents.
In a holistic view, this partnership and related government initiatives symbolize a promising opportunity for Fijians facing housing challenges. With combined efforts focused on enhancing access to safe and affordable housing, there is hope for transformative change in living conditions across Fiji.
