In response to escalating concerns about educational challenges, an innovative online education program has been launched to enhance literacy and numeracy skills for students in years five to eight. This initiative, spearheaded by the Navua-based Berea Trust in collaboration with AZVASA’s Learning Management System and the Whānau Community Trust of New Zealand, aims to address significant gaps in Fiji’s education system.
The pilot program currently involves 30 students and was initiated following urgent discussions about the shortcomings within Fiji’s educational framework. Berea Trust Director Timoci Waqabaca highlighted the alarming issue where students reach grades seven and eight without foundational skills in writing and speaking English. He emphasized a need to revisit earlier education stages, stating, “Why don’t we take the program back? Start with classes one, two, three, and four.”
Adding credibility to the program, Waqabaca mentioned that it is bolstered by experienced teachers from India and New Zealand, enhancing the quality and execution of the curriculum. Facilitator Kesaia Ledua also noted the program’s distinctive adaptive approach, ensuring students enjoy their learning experience through thoroughly prepared activities and exercises.
Support for this online learning initiative was echoed by Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad, who affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting educational initiatives that extend beyond traditional school settings.
The learning management system focuses on crucial subjects such as English, mathematics, and science, which are integral to developing essential critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
This program represents a constructive step towards reforming the educational landscape in Fiji. As noted in previous discussions regarding declining literacy rates among students, it is clear that there is momentum in addressing these challenges collaboratively.
