The Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens tournament is gearing up to introduce new initiatives for this year’s event. The official launch took place at Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd’s headquarters in Suva, where both the Fiji Bitter Yasawa Sevens and Wairiki Sevens tournaments were unveiled.

One significant update to the Wairiki Sevens format this year is the addition of categories for players aged under 15 to under 18, while Netball and Volleyball will not be included. This change aims to enhance grassroots player development within the region, providing younger athletes with more opportunities to participate and grow in the sport.

The tournament is set to feature 32 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams, indicating strong interest and participation from the local community. Mark Spencer, General Manager of Paradise Beverages, highlighted the importance of their long-standing partnership, which has lasted for 17 years.

The Nacula Yasawa 7s tournament is scheduled to take place from December 6-7 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, while the Wairiki Sevens will occur from December 11-14 at the Wairiki grounds in Taveuni.

This year’s changes and the emphasis on youth participation underscore a positive step towards nurturing the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji, fostering a vibrant sporting culture. It’s exciting to see how these initiatives will impact the tournaments and the participants.

In summary, the Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens is evolving by incorporating youth categories into its structure, highlighting a commitment to player development and strengthening community engagement in sports.
