“Innovative Businessman Partners with Government for Community Project in Labasa”

A businessman’s generous offer of land for a health center and police post has impressed Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu. Last Friday, he met with Jitendra Chand, Managing Director of Vuo Supermarket Pte Limited, to inspect the proposed site next to the supermarket in Vunika, Labasa.

Mr. Chand, a native of Labasa, initiated the multimillion-dollar Vuo Supermarket project in 2018. Since assuming office, Dr. Lalabalavu has promoted partnerships between the private sector and the ministry.

The proposed arrangement involves the company constructing the center, while the ministry provides the manpower for its operation. Dr. Lalabalavu described the partnership as a mutually beneficial solution for the government, ministry, company, and the Labasa community.

“This approach minimizes infrastructure concerns for the ministry as the company will handle the construction and maintenance,” he stated. “We look forward to finalizing the details of the agreement to commence this essential project.”

Earlier this year, Mr. Chand briefed Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima and Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Jovesa Vocea about the project. “As a native of Vunika, I want to give back to the community I serve. The people here need medical and policing services, and we are committed to leading this initiative,” Mr. Chand said. He plans to send all necessary documents to the ministry soon to expedite the legal process.
