Inmates Stage Hunger Strike Over Food Dispute: Investigation Underway

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the case of two inmates at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility who recently staged a hunger strike. This investigation follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS), which clarified the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.

The two inmates went on strike due to a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies at the facility, where they were working in the kitchen. They were temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal inquiry into the situation.

In protest of their removal, the inmates commenced a hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated in their roles. FCS confirmed that the strike concluded on Monday evening, after which their medical team assessed the health of the protesting inmates.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that their team is actively looking into the case. The Commission has also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and will continue to monitor the ongoing situation.
