Inmates Launch Hunger Strike Over Kitchen Controversy in Fiji

Two inmates at a facility operated by the Fiji Corrections Service have begun a hunger strike, which started on Friday, September 20, 2024. The Fiji Corrections Service confirmed in a statement that both inmates had previously worked in the kitchen but were removed from their duties following a dispute over food supply management, prompting an internal investigation.

The inmates are dissatisfied with their removal and are demanding to be reinstated. Despite efforts from senior officials, healthcare professionals, and support staff to counsel them, the hunger strike continues.

In addition, the service is reaching out to spiritual leaders from the inmates’ faith communities to offer further support. The Fiji Corrections Service has assured the public that the health and well-being of the inmates are its highest priority.

Medical staff are closely monitoring the situation, and precautions are in place to protect the inmates’ health during this time. The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the hunger strike developments.

The Fiji Corrections Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates while addressing their grievances through established internal processes. They are actively working to resolve the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
