The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced it is investigating the situation involving two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. The inquiry was prompted by a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) on Saturday, which detailed the inmates’ reasons for their protest.
The inmates, who worked in the facility’s kitchen, initiated their hunger strike last Friday after being temporarily reassigned due to disputes regarding food supply management. They demanded to be reinstated in their previous positions as a sign of their discontent.
FCS reported that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with the facility’s medical team conducting health assessments of the inmates. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma confirmed that a team from the Commission is currently investigating the issue. The FHRADC also stated that the inmates are receiving necessary medical assistance and that they will continue to monitor the developments.
