Inmates’ Hunger Strike Sparks Investigation in Fiji Correctional Facility

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced it is investigating the case of two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This investigation was confirmed following a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) on Saturday, which addressed the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.

The two inmates expressed their dissatisfaction after a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies, which led to their temporary removal from their positions within the facility’s kitchen to facilitate an internal inquiry. In response to their removal, the inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous roles.

FCS issued another statement indicating that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, after which their medical team evaluated the health status of the participants. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma confirmed that a team from the Commission is looking into the issue. The FHRADC stated that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and will continue to be monitored.
