Inmates’ Hunger Strike Sparks Human Rights Investigation in Fiji

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced an investigation into the hunger strike of two inmates at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. The inquiry was confirmed following a statement from Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) detailing the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.

The inmates initiated their hunger strike in response to grievances regarding the management of food supplies at the facility. Both individuals were involved in the kitchen operations but were temporarily reassigned to facilitate an internal investigation.

In their protest, they demanded to be reinstated to their former positions, leading them to refuse food starting last Friday. FCS issued a subsequent statement indicating that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with the facility’s medical team assessing the inmates’ health.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma indicated that a team from the Commission is looking into the situation. The Commission has also confirmed that the inmates are receiving necessary medical care and will continue to monitor their condition.
