The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced it is investigating the case involving two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction Facility. This investigation was confirmed following a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) which explained the reasons behind the protest.

The inmates staged their hunger strike in response to a disagreement over the management of food supplies, having been assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen. They were temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal investigation.

In a show of dissatisfaction, these inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous roles. FCS announced that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with medical personnel evaluating the health of the participants.

FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is actively investigating the situation. Furthermore, the FHRADC confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical care and will continue to observe the case closely.
