The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has initiated an investigation into the case of two inmates who staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correctional Facility. This action followed a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) released on Saturday, which addressed the reasons behind the hunger strike.

The two inmates, who had been working in the facility’s kitchen, initiated the protest due to a disagreement over food supply management. They were temporarily removed from their duties to facilitate an internal investigation into the issue.

In response to their discontent, the inmates began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated in their previous positions. FCS confirmed that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with the facility’s medical team evaluating the health status of the strikers.

Pravesh Sharma, Commissioner of FHRADC, stated that a team from the Commission is looking into the incident. Furthermore, FHRADC announced that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and that the situation will continue to be monitored.
