The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating a case involving two inmates at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility who recently held a hunger strike. This investigation follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) explaining that the hunger strike stemmed from a dispute over food supply management.
The inmates, who were working in the facility’s kitchen, were temporarily reassigned from their positions to facilitate the internal investigation. In response to this action, they initiated a hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their former roles.
FCS confirmed that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with their medical team evaluating the health of the participating inmates. Pravesh Sharma, the Commissioner of FHRADC, stated that a dedicated team from the Commission is looking into the situation. Additionally, FHRADC confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical support and that the Commission will continue to monitor the situation closely.
