The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed that Edwin Nand, a convicted murderer, was assaulted by another inmate while in custody. The FCS rejected claims from Nand’s lawyer, Sunil Gosai, alleging that prison officers were involved in the attack.
The FCS explained that the confrontation was due to personal disagreements between inmates and that Nand suffered lacerations during the altercation. Fortunately, the FCS Medics Unit was quick to provide treatment for his injuries.
In response to the incident, the FCS advised Gosai to provide verified information and to consider multiple perspectives regarding the situation. This event has reignited discussions about safety protocols within Fiji’s correctional facilities, an ongoing concern addressed in previous reports highlighting the need for appropriate inmate treatment and the responsible use of force.
The FCS has underscored its commitment to ensuring the safety and humane treatment of inmates, stating that transparency and accountability are foundational principles guiding their operations. Any internal investigations regarding staff conduct will be approached with the utmost seriousness.
While the situation involving Nand raises alarms, it also underscores the critical need for communication and due process within the correctional system. Such incidents point to a larger goal of fostering a secure environment that supports the rehabilitation and safety of all individuals in custody, encouraging a hopeful outlook for improvements in correctional policies and practices.
