Local professional boxer Mikaele Ravalaca has unfortunately been compelled to withdraw from his much-anticipated Super Welterweight Title match this weekend due to an injury sustained during a recent brawl. Naroon Buksh, promoter for Zeg Kings Boxing, confirmed the news, stating that Ravalaca shared photographs of his injury, making it clear he would not be able to compete in the bout scheduled for the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
In Ravalaca’s absence, Ratu Rakuro Daunivavana will take his place and face off against William Korocariwi in this title fight. Buksh reassured fans that the event will proceed as planned, emphasizing that the title fight remains intact. Currently, they are awaiting an official medical certificate from Ravalaca to finalize his withdrawal.
This development comes with a heavy reminder of the dangers associated with boxing. Following the tragic incident last year where Ubaid Haider lost his life after a match, there is an increased focus on ensuring the safety of all participants in the sport. Buksh reiterated that the utmost priority is the well-being of fighters, highlighting ongoing commitments to medical protocols.
Despite this setback for Ravalaca, it is essential to recognize that the sport continues to thrive, as evidenced by the resilience of its athletes and the organizers’ commitment to presenting exciting competitions. This event will not only provide an opportunity for Daunivavana but also reflects the passion within the boxing community in Fiji.
The upcoming matches promise to showcase the talent within the sport and may pave the way for new champions, fueling hope and enthusiasm among local boxing fans and future athletes alike.
