Some cane access roads in the Northern Division are still facing significant issues just as the crushing season is set to commence at the Labasa sugar mill, according to local farmer Satish Chand. While acknowledging that most of the roads have seen recent repairs and improvements, he pointed out that several remain in poor condition, particularly those accessing sugarcane fields.

Chand expressed gratitude for the current government’s efforts, remarking that previous administrations consistently failed to deliver adequate infrastructure improvements, leaving farmers frustrated over unfulfilled promises of investments. “We hear all the time that millions are being invested, but where was that money going?” he questioned, emphasizing the need for visible results from such expenditures.

Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh responded to these concerns, stating that contractors have been engaged to address the remaining road repairs promptly. The sugarcane crushing season is scheduled to begin on June 17, which highlights the urgency of resolving these infrastructural issues to ensure smooth operations.

Historically, poor road conditions have hindered farmers’ ability to transport their products efficiently, mirroring challenges faced in previous years. There is a hopeful outlook, however, stemming from favorable weather conditions, which promise a productive harvest this year, if farmers can haul their cane effectively.

The ongoing infrastructure challenges highlight a persistent theme in the sugar industry, reinforcing the necessity for sustained efforts in road maintenance and improvements to secure the livelihoods of local farmers and ensure the economic stability of agricultural communities in the region. Farmers remain cautiously optimistic as repair works continue and the season approaches, underlining the critical link between infrastructure and agricultural productivity.
