The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging social media influencers and all road users to stop engaging in dangerous driving practices, such as using mobile phones and other devices to film while driving. Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed concern about the rise in videos shared on platforms like Facebook and TikTok that showcase such reckless behavior, which not only violate the law but also endanger road safety.
Rokosawa highlighted that these videos, which often draw large audiences, convey a misleading message that these behaviors are acceptable behind the wheel. He emphasized that such actions are illegal and irresponsible, warning that they set a dangerous example for other drivers. “Driving while distracted by electronic devices is both illegal and hazardous,” he stated.
The LTA is monitoring social media platforms to identify and respond to these risky activities. Rokosawa noted the serious consequences of such distractions, pointing out that using electronic devices while driving increases the likelihood of accidents and jeopardizes the safety of all road users. He also listed other significant risks contributing to fatal accidents, including speeding, impaired driving, driver fatigue, and lack of proper steering control.
In light of recent incidents and the growing trend of dangerous driving, the LTA plans to enhance its enforcement efforts, especially during this busy travel season. Enforcement personnel will be deployed to high-traffic areas, particularly near transport hubs, major roads, and areas known for accidents.
Strict adherence to speed limits and traffic regulations will be emphasized, targeting reckless and impaired driving. “Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of all road users,” Rokosawa stated, affirming the commitment to creating a safer driving environment and reducing road accidents.
The public is encouraged to report reckless driving or unsafe behaviors through the LTA’s complaints register via text or email.
