The opportunity to explore the vibrant culture and environment of Indonesia through an academic scholarship has proven to be transformative for Sokovoli Odrovakavula, affectionately known as Soko. A current instructor at Fiji National University and president of the Indonesian Scholarships Fiji Alumni, Soko is dedicated to enabling more Fijian students to experience similar life-changing educational journeys.

During an information session organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Suva, he shared insights on how studying in Indonesia—one of Asia’s most dynamic nations—has profoundly influenced his views on education, culture, and regional cooperation. According to Soko, Indonesia embodies diversity, discipline, and innovation, qualities he believes resonate strongly with Pacific students.

“Indonesia is not just a place to study; it is a place to grow,” he stated, urging prospective applicants to embrace the challenges and rewards of living and learning in a different cultural setting. Soko fondly recounted the friendships he formed, the language skills he gained, and the broader regional perspective that enriched his academic experience.

He also acknowledged the challenges of adjusting to a new education system but emphasized that these obstacles ultimately helped him develop resilience and independence. Soko now channels his experiences into mentoring students and enhancing alumni networks. Under his leadership, the Indonesian Scholarships Fiji Alumni has made significant strides in connecting former scholars, fostering cultural exchanges, and supporting new applicants in navigating the scholarship process.

He firmly believes that Fiji’s development can be augmented by graduates familiar with Asia’s economic and technological landscape, stating, “Our region is interconnected, and the knowledge and relationships we build overseas can contribute directly to Fiji’s progress at home.”

While acknowledging the challenges of traveling abroad, Soko highlighted the personal growth that comes with taking such steps, encouraging youth to step beyond their comfort zones and return equipped to make a difference back in Fiji.
