Indo-Fijian Schools Thrive Amid Population Decline: A Community’s Commitment

Indo-Fijian managed schools are continuing to provide education despite a drop in the population of Indo-Fijians, according to Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad. He spoke at the Shree Krishna Leela event held at the Nanuku Sangam School in Rakiraki on Saturday night.

Professor Prasad emphasized that the schools established by the Girmitya community were designed to cater to all children in the nation, not just those of the Girmitya descent. He noted that these schools remain open to students from all ethnic backgrounds, including iTaukei children.

He highlighted the urgent need for upgrades in rural schools and expressed gratitude to the Nanuku community for hosting the Krishna Leela event, which aimed to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the school.

In response to community requests for government funding for educational programs that promote religious learning while supporting fundraising efforts, he indicated that he would consider such requests. By the end of the event, organizers had successfully raised over $10,000 during the week-long program.
