IndiGo in Turbulence: New Crew Rest Rules Spark Mass Cancellations

Last week, in a heartbreaking display of love and devotion, Manjuri carried her late husband’s coffin across towns in India’s northeastern region, with hopes of catching a flight to Kolkata for his final farewell. However, her journey took a tragic turn when delays from IndiGo, India’s largest airline, left her stranded for hours before ultimately cancelling the flight.

Manjuri was one of many passengers whose travel plans were severely disrupted as a series of unexpected cancellations by IndiGo thrust India’s aviation industry into one of its most significant crises in years. A minor wave of delays escalated rapidly, resulting in over 1,000 cancellations on December 5 alone, leaving families in distress and forcing individuals to miss important events such as weddings, funerals, and crucial examinations.

Once celebrated as a symbol of India’s successful low-cost aviation boom, commanding a 60% market share with around 2,000 daily flights, IndiGo is now in danger of tarnishing its hard-earned reputation as a dependable low-cost carrier. Experts warn that this crisis could lead to substantial financial repercussions for IndiGo, including revenue loss from cancellations, refunds, and compensatory measures for the inconvenienced customers, along with possible penalties from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The turbulence in IndiGo’s operations has been attributed to new crew-rostering regulations intended to ensure more rest for pilots and cabin crew, which the airline reportedly failed to adequately prepare for. This oversight has resulted in a shortage of legally rested personnel, compelling the airline to ground over half of its fleet. The new rules call for longer weekly rest periods for pilots—extending from 36 to 48 hours—and reduced limits on night landings, a change made after years of complaints regarding crew fatigue.

Despite the turmoil, there is hope that the aviation sector can recover and learn from these challenges. As IndiGo addresses the root of the problem and adapts to the new regulations, a commitment to improved operational stability and customer service may help restore passenger confidence in the airline. These changes could ultimately lead to a stronger, more resilient aviation industry moving forward.
