Rugby legend Waisale Serevi has announced plans for the Indian women’s rugby 7s team to potentially compete in the 2026 Coral Coast 7s in Fiji as part of their preparations for the upcoming Asian Games. Serevi, appointed as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams in June of last year, emphasizes the significance of this opportunity for the players.
“This is part of their preparation for the Asian Games, which is akin to their Olympics,” Serevi stated. He noted that while rugby in India is still developing, there is a strong commitment to advancing the sport. “They have clubs there, but it’s not a rapidly growing phenomenon. It’s slowly building up,” he explained, highlighting the desire of Indian rugby to reach new heights.
Since assuming his coaching role, Serevi has been dedicated to enhancing India’s rugby framework, focusing on skill development, fitness, and providing international exposure for the players. He remains optimistic about the future of rugby in India, noting the positive developments occurring within the sport.
Although his return to India around mid-year is uncertain, Serevi is concentrating on his own Serevi Academy and takes pride in the contributions he has already made. His efforts reflect a promising path forward for India’s women’s rugby team as they build towards significant competitions.
This initiative is more than just competition; it underscores a broader ambition to elevate rugby within India and showcases the increasing global nature of the sport. As the country prepares for the Asian Games, the insights and experience that the players gain from participating in established tournaments like the Coral Coast 7s could play a pivotal role in shaping their future success.
