President Droupadi Murmu emphasized India’s dedication to climate justice for Fiji and other ocean nations during her significant visit earlier this week. She assured the Fijian Parliament of India’s consistent support for climate initiatives.
“As a strong advocate of the Global South, India will continue to stand alongside Fiji and other ocean states in the pursuit of climate justice,” she stated. President Murmu commended Fiji for its vital role in the global fight against climate change and its efforts towards sustainable development.
During her visit, she also highlighted the value India places on its partnership with Fiji. A key outcome was the formal allocation of land for a 100-bedded Super Specialty Hospital to be constructed in Suva, funded by a Government of India grant. This project was originally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023.
“We believe that this essential healthcare infrastructure will significantly enhance the provision of quality and affordable medical services, not just for Fiji, but for the entire Pacific region,” she noted.
Additionally, the Fijian Government allocated land for the new Indian High Commission and Cultural Centre in Suva. Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar emphasized India’s readiness to collaborate with Fiji to create a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous future.
President Murmu recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014, where he underscored the core values that bond the two nations, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development ambitions and strengthening cooperation across various sectors.
In a historic gesture, President Murmu became the first Indian head of state to visit Fiji and was awarded the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, in a ceremony at the State House that highlighted the enduring ties between India and Fiji.
Expressing her deep gratitude for the recognition, she described it as a symbol of the strong friendship between the two countries. “This award reflects the deep bond of friendship that India shares with Fiji,” President Murmu commented during the accolade presentation.
She also engaged with the lively Indian community in Fiji, addressing a gathering where she praised the resilience of the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured laborers who arrived in Fiji 145 years ago. She acknowledged the Indian diaspora’s critical role as partners in India’s progress.
“We value our overseas Indian community around the globe as vital partners in realizing the vision of a prosperous India,” she stated.
President Murmu paid homage to the historical and cultural ties between India and Fiji, visiting the National War Memorial in Suva to honor fallen soldiers and laying floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.
Her three-nation tour, which also includes stops in New Zealand and Timor-Leste, reaffirms India’s commitment to enhancing relationships with Pacific Island nations.
