India’s Pledge for Climate Justice: President Murmu’s Historic Fiji Visit

President Droupadi Murmu reaffirmed India’s dedication to climate justice for Fiji and other ocean nations during her significant visit earlier this week. She expressed India’s steadfast support for climate justice while addressing the Fijian Parliament.

“With India serving as a strong voice for the Global South, we will continue to stand alongside Fiji and other ocean nations in advocating for climate justice,” she stated. President Murmu commended Fiji for its vital contributions to global climate change initiatives and sustainable development.

During her visit, she highlighted the value India places on its development partnership with Fiji. A noteworthy outcome was the formal designation of land for the construction of a 100-bedded Super Specialty Hospital in Suva, funded by the Government of India. This project was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023.

“We believe this important infrastructure will significantly improve the delivery of quality and affordable healthcare not only in Fiji but throughout the Pacific region,” she remarked. Additionally, the Fijian Government allocated land for India’s High Commission premises and Indian Cultural Centre in Suva, as mentioned by Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar during a special media briefing.

“As India strengthens its presence on the global stage, we are eager to collaborate with Fiji based on your needs, to create a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous nation together,” he noted.

President Murmu emphasized the importance of partnership for the mutual benefit of the people of both nations and recalled Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014, which underscored the core values uniting the two countries and highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development goals.

In a historic moment, marking the first visit by an Indian head of state to Fiji, President Murmu received Fiji’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ from President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere. The award ceremony at the State House showcased the deep ties between the two nations.

President Murmu expressed her gratitude for the honor, describing it as a reflection of the strong and friendly relations shared by India and Fiji. “This award symbolizes the enduring bond of friendship between our countries,” she stated during the ceremony.

The President also connected with the vibrant Indian community in Fiji, addressing an enthusiastic audience. She paid homage to the resilience of the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured laborers who migrated to Fiji 145 years ago and emphasized the significance of the Indian diaspora as vital partners in India’s growth and development journey.

“We regard our global Indian community as key stakeholders in realizing the India of our dreams,” she asserted. President Murmu honored the shared historical and cultural links between India and Fiji, visiting the National War Memorial in Suva to pay respects to fallen soldiers and laying floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.

Her three-nation tour, which also includes visits to New Zealand and Timor-Leste, highlights India’s commitment to enhancing its relationships with Pacific Island nations.
