President Droupadi Murmu reaffirmed India’s commitment to climate justice for Fiji and other ocean states during her recent historic visit. She assured the Fijian Parliament of India’s steadfast support for climate justice, stating, “As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Fiji and other ocean states for climate justice.”

President Murmu commended Fiji for its significant contributions to the global climate change agenda and sustainable development. She took the opportunity to emphasize India’s focus on its development partnership with Fiji. A key outcome of her visit was the formal designation of the site for a 100-bedded Super Speciality Hospital to be established in Suva, funded by a Government of India grant. This project was initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023.

The President expressed confidence that this vital infrastructure will lead to notable improvements in the quality and affordability of healthcare in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region. Another significant outcome was the allocation of land by the Fijian Government for the construction of India’s High Commission premises and an Indian Cultural Centre in Suva, as noted by Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar during a media briefing.

During her visit, President Murmu emphasized India’s readiness to collaborate with Fiji to foster a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous nation. She highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation to maximize the potential of their partnership. Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014, she reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development goals and enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

Marking a historic first, President Murmu was honored with Fiji’s highest civilian award, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ by President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere at a ceremony at the State House. She expressed her gratitude for this honor, viewing it as a reflection of the strong and friendly relations between India and Fiji.

President Murmu also engaged with the Indian community in Fiji, addressing an enthusiastic audience and praising the resilience of the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured laborers who settled in Fiji 145 years ago. She underlined the Indian diaspora’s role as essential partners in India’s development journey, acknowledging their contributions to both countries.

Additionally, she honored the shared historical ties between India and Fiji by visiting the National War Memorial in Suva, paying tribute to fallen soldiers, and laying floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.

This three-nation visit, which also includes New Zealand and Timor-Leste, highlights India’s dedication to strengthening ties with Pacific Island nations.
