India’s Historic Pledge for Climate Justice in Fiji

President Droupadi Murmu reaffirmed India’s dedication to climate justice for Fiji and other ocean states during her landmark visit this week. In her address to the Fijian Parliament, she expressed India’s steadfast support for climate justice, stating, “As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Fiji and other ocean states for climate justice.”

President Murmu acknowledged Fiji’s crucial role in global initiatives to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. She emphasized the significance of India’s developmental partnership with Fiji.

A key outcome of her visit was the formal allocation of land for a 100-bedded Super Specialty Hospital to be established in Suva, funded as a grant-in-aid project by the Indian government. This project was initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023. “We are confident that this critical infrastructure for public good will bring a paradigm change in the delivery of quality and affordable healthcare, not just for Fiji, but for the entire Pacific region,” she noted.

Additionally, the Fijian Government allocated land for the construction of the Indian High Commission premises and the Indian Cultural Centre in Suva. Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar highlighted that as India strengthens its position on the global stage, it is prepared to collaborate with Fiji in alignment with its priorities to create a more resilient and prosperous nation.

President Murmu called for unity to unlock the potential of the partnership for the benefit of both countries. Reflecting on Prime Minister Modi’s 2014 visit to Fiji, she reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development goals and enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

During her historic visit, the first by an Indian head of state to Fiji, President Murmu was honored with Fiji’s highest civilian award, ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ by President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere at a ceremony at the State House, emphasizing the deep ties between India and Fiji. She expressed her gratitude for the honor, interpreting it as a symbol of the strong friendship between the two nations.

In addition, President Murmu engaged with Fiji’s vibrant Indian community, addressing a gathering and praising the resilience of the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured laborers who arrived in Fiji 145 years ago. She highlighted the Indian diaspora as crucial allies in India’s progress.

She also paid homage to the historical and cultural connections between India and Fiji by visiting the National War Memorial in Suva to honor fallen soldiers and laid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.

President Murmu’s trip, which also includes visits to New Zealand and Timor-Leste, reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its relationships with Pacific Island nations.
