India is broadening its healthcare support in Fiji, as highlighted by Indian High Commissioner Shri Suneet Mehta. He noted the increasing number of Fijians traveling to India for advanced medical treatments such as surgeries, organ transplants, and cancer care. Mehta emphasized India’s commitment to healthcare partnerships, viewing them as a collective responsibility grounded in trust and shared knowledge.

During his address at the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences International Health Conference, Mehta mentioned that India not only plans to build hospitals in Fiji but will also provide training for local healthcare workers. This initiative is part of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program, which facilitates training opportunities in leading Indian institutions for Fijian healthcare professionals. Additionally, initiatives like telemedicine and digital health integration are set to address geographical barriers, enhancing healthcare delivery across Fiji.

Pundit Bhuwan Dutt, Pro-Chancellor of Uni Fiji, expressed optimism that the conference would foster better health sector outcomes for Fiji and the wider Pacific region. He is confident that it will open up new opportunities and discussions aimed at driving innovation and collaboration within the healthcare system.

These advancements resonate with recent projects aimed at improving healthcare access in Fiji, including the construction of the Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital. Such initiatives are expected to provide affordable, high-quality medical care closer to home, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment.

Both the ongoing initiatives in healthcare and the commitment shown by the Indian government reflect a hopeful perspective for the future of medical services in Fiji and the region. The partnership between Fiji and India symbolizes not only a mutual commitment to enhancing health services but also a deepening of historical and cultural ties that can benefit both nations in their pursuit of improved public health outcomes.
