India’s Climate Justice Commitment Shines in Historic Fiji Visit

President Droupadi Murmu reaffirmed India’s dedication to climate justice for Fiji and other ocean states during her recent historic visit. In her address to the Fijian Parliament, she offered India’s steadfast support for climate initiatives. “As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Fiji and other ocean states for climate justice,” she stated, commending Fiji’s substantial contributions toward addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development.

During her visit, President Murmu emphasized the significance of India’s development partnership with Fiji. A key result of her trip was the official allocation of land for a 100-bedded Super Specialty Hospital in Suva, supported by the Indian government. This initiative was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023. “We are confident that this crucial infrastructure will transform the provision of quality and affordable healthcare, benefiting Fiji and the wider Pacific region,” she remarked.

Additionally, the Fijian Government allocated land for India’s High Commission and the Indian Cultural Centre in Suva, as outlined by Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar during a media briefing. “As India strengthens its position globally, we are prepared to collaborate with Fiji in line with your priorities to foster a more resilient and prosperous nation,” he stated, urging both countries to maximize their partnership for mutual benefit.

President Murmu reflected on Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014, where he underscored the shared values uniting India and Fiji while recommitting to Fiji’s developmental objectives. Marking a significant moment in diplomatic relations, President Murmu became the first Indian head of state to visit Fiji, receiving the highest civilian award, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ from President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere during a ceremony at the State House, emphasizing the deep-rooted ties between the nations.

Expressing her sincere appreciation for the honor, President Murmu suggested that it symbolizes the robust friendship shared between India and Fiji. “This award reflects the strong bond of friendship that exists between India and Fiji,” she noted.

The President also interacted with the Indian community in Fiji, celebrating the resilience of the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured laborers who arrived in the country 145 years ago. She highlighted the significance of the Indian diaspora as crucial partners in India’s development journey, stating, “We view our overseas Indian community worldwide as vital stakeholders in realizing our dreams for India.”

Furthermore, she paid homage to the historical and cultural links between India and Fiji by visiting the National War Memorial in Suva to honor fallen soldiers and laid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School. President Murmu’s trip, which also includes visits to New Zealand and Timor-Leste, underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its relations with Pacific Island nations.
