India’s Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Sunday that the country is implementing measures to ensure the protection of its domestic fuel supplies in light of rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly following recent attacks by the United States on Iranian nuclear sites. These developments have heightened fears of disruptions in oil and gas supplies, resulting in concerns over soaring energy prices.

Since the Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began on June 13, energy markets have been on high alert due to the risk of supply disruptions—especially through the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial as about 20% of global oil and gas flows through this region. Puri emphasized that India has diversified its fuel supply routes in recent years, decreasing reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. He assured that Indian Oil Marketing Companies have sufficient reserves and continue to receive supplies from various sources. In cases of need, India plans to seek increased crude supplies from alternative sources.

Puri expressed hope for calming geopolitical tensions, anticipating that efforts will lead to de-escalation rather than further conflict. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a discussion with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the escalating situation.

This proactive stance by India is crucial, considering its status as the world’s third-largest oil importer, sourcing less than 50% of its 4.8 million barrels per day from the Middle East. The ongoing situation underscores the importance of strategic planning and diplomatic engagement in ensuring energy security amidst global challenges.

The current geopolitical climate remains precarious, with potential implications for international oil markets. However, India’s diversified approach provides a layer of resilience against uncertainty, showcasing the nation’s commitment to securing stable energy supplies for its citizens. Efforts at diplomatic resolution and dialogue will be essential in reducing tensions in the region moving forward.
