India has sent a vital shipment of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to Fiji as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s public health response to the escalating HIV epidemic. The decision to dispatch these drugs comes amidst reports that HIV infections in Fiji have surged significantly, with the Ministry of Health declaring an outbreak earlier this year. The spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted the ongoing commitment of New Delhi to assist nations in the Global South with health and humanitarian challenges.
Fiji’s HIV crisis is alarming, with the number of infections rising to approximately 5,900 cases by 2024 — an eleven-fold increase since 2014. This rapid growth places Fiji as having the second-fastest growing HIV epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region, trailing only Papua New Guinea. Health experts have pointed out that limited access to HIV testing and a shortage of essential medicines have worsened the situation, creating serious gaps in diagnosis and treatment. The arrival of India’s medical assistance underscores the urgent need for effective responses to this burgeoning health crisis.
The partnership with international organizations has proven beneficial. For instance, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) previously supplied Fiji with emergency ARV drugs in response to its rising HIV cases, which had seen a staggering 260 percent increase over the past year.
