India has reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with Fiji, highlighting significant developments in healthcare, education, and defense. At the Republic Day Reception in Nadi, Indian High Commissioner Suneet Mehta emphasized the vital role of the Indian diaspora in bolstering the bilateral relationship, noting that the Girmitiya community has significantly influenced Fiji’s social, cultural, and economic fabric since the 19th century.

Mehta mentioned that the year 2025 is set to mark a pivotal moment in India-Fiji relations, underpinned by ongoing high-level interactions. He pointed out that Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu visited India in November to inaugurate a 600-bed hospital in Muddenahalli and participate in the One World, One Family World Cultural Festival 2025.

The contributions of the Indian community in Fiji span various sectors, including agriculture, trade, and public services, reinforcing the bond between the two nations. Political relations have gained momentum, with 24 ministerial visits since December 2022 and the 6th India–Fiji Foreign Office Consultations that took place last year, which focused on areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and renewable energy.

Healthcare is a primary focus, with Mehta announcing plans for the construction of a 100-bed Super Specialty Hospital in Suva, intended to serve as a regional healthcare hub. Additionally, cooperation has expanded to include joint health discussions, telemedicine initiatives, the Heal in India program, and increased access to affordable medications, including donations of anti-retroviral drugs for HIV treatment programs.

Furthermore, the first India-Fiji Joint Working Group on Defense has laid the groundwork for collaboration on training, maritime security, capacity building, and disaster response efforts, signaling a robust partnership that is set to grow even stronger in the coming years. This ongoing collaboration promises not only to benefit both nations but also to foster regional stability and development.
