India and Fiji have renewed their commitment to agricultural cooperation by extending their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for an additional five years. The two nations also agreed to establish a Joint Working Group aimed at enhancing collaboration in agriculture and food security.
This agreement was confirmed by India’s Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, following his meeting with Fijian Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi. Chouhan emphasized the historic ties between India and Fiji, which are founded on mutual respect, cooperation, and strong cultural and interpersonal links.
The discussions between the ministers resulted in a commitment to an extended MoU and the formation of the Joint Working Group, which is intended to provide a robust framework for deepening bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. Key areas of collaboration identified during the talks include agricultural research, genetic exchange, and joint efforts to reduce food loss and waste.
In addition to agricultural matters, the ministers explored opportunities to expand student exchange programs, strengthen capacity-building initiatives, and enhance technology and knowledge sharing between the two countries.
This renewed partnership is anticipated to bolster Fiji’s agricultural development and food security while further solidifying India’s engagement with Pacific Island nations, fostering practical and long-lasting partnerships in the region. The outcomes from this meeting signal a positive trajectory for both nations, strengthening their collaborative efforts and contributing to regional stability and prosperity.
