The Government of India, recognized as the world’s leading producer of generic medicines, has formally delivered over three tonnes of Anti-Retroviral (ARV) drugs to the Government of Fiji. This significant handover occurred on November 11, 2025, at the Fiji Pharmaceutical & Biomedical Services Centre (FPBS). The event was attended by notable figures, including Suneet Mehta, the High Commissioner of India to Fiji, and Fiji’s Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, among other senior officials.
This donation, which marks the largest single consignment of medicines gifted by India to Fiji, reaffirms India’s commitment to enhancing public health cooperation and supporting Fiji’s initiatives to address the growing incidence of HIV. The life-saving ARV medications are intended to bolster the national HIV response, especially in light of a recent uptick in reported cases. India has previously donated similar medical supplies to Fiji in the years 2021, 2022, and 2023.
In his remarks, Mr. Mehta noted that this donation is part of the deepening bilateral cooperation between India and Fiji in the health sector. This partnership also encompasses the establishment of a 100-bed super-speciality hospital in Suva, the provision of affordable generic medicines under the Jan Aushadhi Scheme, and the organization of the Jaipur Foot Camp.
India continues to play a crucial role in the global fight against AIDS, producing two-thirds of the world’s ARV drugs and improving access to affordable treatments globally. This recent gesture demonstrates India’s dedication as a reliable development and humanitarian partner, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
Dr. Lalabalavu expressed sincere appreciation for India’s timely assistance, which is vital for maintaining uninterrupted care for citizens living with HIV in Fiji. He emphasized that this support significantly reinforces Fiji’s capabilities in implementing its national HIV Outbreak Response Plan.
The consignment of ARV drugs is expected to be quickly distributed throughout Fiji, ensuring that patients receive their essential medications without interruption. This latest support further highlights India’s commitment to working collaboratively with Fiji and assisting during crucial times, thereby promoting health and well-being within the nation.
