The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force have announced plans to increase traffic patrols and checkpoints in high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and manage traffic effectively.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Filipe Tuisawau, reported a serious traffic accident involving a bus and a twin-cab utility vehicle in Vitogo along Kings Road, which resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital. Ro Filipe expressed his condolences to those injured and emphasized the urgent need for all road users to be vigilant and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.

The National Joint Operations Order, established between the LTA, Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers, is designed to promote road safety, reduce fatalities, and ensure compliance with the law. This initiative is particularly timely as the festive season approaches, which typically sees an increase in road traffic due to holiday activities and family gatherings. The operation will run from November 1 to January 31.

As of November 11, road fatalities have dropped to 51, compared to 71 during the same period last year, signaling positive progress in road safety efforts.

This coordinated effort not only aims to reduce accidents during the busy festive season but also reflects a commitment to improving overall road safety in Fiji. With increased vigilance and enforcement, there is hope for a safer driving environment for all citizens.

Summary: The LTA and Fiji Police are enhancing road safety by increasing traffic patrols in high-risk areas following a serious accident that hospitalized 18 individuals. With the festive season approaching, they are promoting compliance with traffic regulations, contributing to a decrease in road fatalities compared to last year.
