Inaugural Yaro Chiefs 7s Kicks Off Fiji Rugby Season

The inaugural Yaro Chiefs 7s tournament kicked off at Churchill Park in Lautoka, marking a significant event on Fiji’s rugby calendar. Held over two days, the tournament features thrilling competition as teams participate in pool matches under ideal weather conditions. This event is notable as it prepares local Yaro teams for the upcoming Fiji Bitter 7s Series.

Tournament director James Vunituraga expressed gratitude to the teams and supporters, emphasizing the main goal of the tournament to raise funds to support the Yaro Chiefs team. This year, the team has actively participated in over six Fiji Bitter 7s tournaments nationwide, aiming to travel to all six events in the next series.

Former Fiji 7s star Amenoni Nasilasila showcased strong leadership as the Yaro Chiefs battled in their opening matches, narrowly defeating Loloma 7s from Savusavu 7-5 and overcoming Lau Brothers 19-7.

In the women’s division, the Kadavu Stallions made a sensational start, triumphing over Yaro Queens 24-10, while Sunset Rebels dominated Yasawa Women with a commanding 35-0 victory. Sinukakala Amazons also secured a win against Ezers, finishing 17-7. The Ezers team, primarily composed of Ba women’s rugby players, recently clinched the Ranadi Cup and is committed to competing in local tournaments during the off-season.

With all pool matches completed on the opening day, Day Two promises further excitement as elimination rounds are set to take place, followed by the finals in the afternoon. This tournament not only highlights the skill and spirit of rugby in Fiji but also fosters community support and engagement, nurturing a passion for the sport that will inspire future generations of players.
