Waisea Mataitoga, the former manager of the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team and a significant figure in Fijian rugby, passed away on Sunday at the age of 42. His unexpected demise has left a profound impact on the rugby community and beyond.

Saiasi Fuli, the former head coach of the Fijiana sevens team, expressed his sorrow, highlighting Mataitoga’s passion for his work and his ability to bring joy to those around him. Fuli fondly remembered Mataitoga for his infectious sense of humor and dedication, stating, “He does his work with passion which will surely be missed.” Mataitoga also briefly served as the Fijiana 7s manager from late 2022 to 2023, collaborating closely with Fuli during that time.

Mataitoga was deeply involved in the rugby development programme in Fiji and achieved notable success as the manager of the Vodafone Deans Queen Victoria School U18 team. His contributions to the sport were recognized by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), which released a statement expressing heartfelt condolences. They acknowledged that Mataitoga’s loss was profoundly felt by the rugby family and the wider community.

As a mark of respect, the FRU staff, board members, and U20 players held a traditional i-reguregu ceremony in his honor. Mataitoga’s legacy will be cherished, and he will be laid to rest today in his village of Nawaikama, Gau, Lomaiviti, alongside his older brother who passed away just a week prior.
