Illegal dumping and persistent littering are significantly impacting waste collection efforts in Suva, according to city officials. Suva City Council Chair Tevita Boseiwaqa has expressed that maintaining a clean city is an ongoing challenge that cannot be managed by municipal councils alone.
To enhance waste management resources, the council has recently introduced a new garbage truck into its fleet. This additional vehicle is expected to bolster the efficiency of waste collection and mitigate existing service gaps. However, Boseiwaqa emphasizes that merely acquiring equipment will not be enough to resolve the underlying problems. He points out that areas cleared by garbage crews often quickly accumulate litter again shortly after the trucks depart.
The situation has compelled the council to schedule extra pickups due to recurrent dumping in the same locations, indicating a pressing need for a broader approach to waste management. Boseiwaqa described waste management as a significant concern for councils across the nation and highlighted ongoing discussions among authorities regarding innovative strategies to tackle the issue more effectively.
