Athletics Fiji Coach Mario Fesaitu recently highlighted the importance of the three-day Ignite Camp, which was held in Suva, as a pivotal step for young athletes transitioning from secondary school athletics to the national level. The camp focused on equipping participants with essential skills required for high-performance sports.
Fesaitu emphasized that the camp aimed to bridge the significant gap that often exists between school-level sports and national competition. Athletes were introduced to key components of elite athlete development such as training discipline, mental preparation, and the significance of support networks. He explained, “For most sports, transitioning from being a school athlete to a national athlete, there’s a huge gap. We hope that future camps like Ignite can actually bridge that gap by exposing athletes to an elite performance environment.”
In addition to technical training, participants learned about off-the-track essentials including nutrition, recovery, financial literacy, and the importance of having a strong support group. The camp prepared many of these young athletes for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games scheduled to take place in Palau at the end of June, which speaks to the broader commitment of Athletics Fiji to nurture talent for future international competitions.
The Ignite Camp aligns with previous initiatives like the recent training programs conducted by the Fiji Sports Council (FSC), which aimed at providing similar opportunities to young athletes from less prominent schools. These initiatives collectively reflect a growing focus on developing a sustainable sports culture in Fiji, marked by inclusivity, improved training methodologies, and a passion for athletics.
As the athletes participate in such preparatory programs, they are not only honing their skills but also fostering a community devoted to sports excellence. The future of athletics in Fiji appears promising as more young talents are encouraged to pursue their dreams with the right support and resources.
