Ian Thorpe Joins LawConnect Ahead of Sydney-Hobart Race

Five-time Olympic swimming gold medallist Ian Thorpe has officially joined the crew of supermaxi LawConnect as they prepare to compete for their third consecutive victory in the prestigious Sydney-Hobart yacht race. At 43 years old, Thorpe will make his racing debut this Friday in the Cabbage Tree Island race, a key event leading up to the 80th Sydney to Hobart race, set to commence on December 26. This iconic race spans approximately 630 nautical miles (1,170 km).

Reflecting on this new challenge, Thorpe expressed excitement about the transition from swimming to sailing, acknowledging the distinct mental and physical demands this sport presents. “I’ve spent my life in and around water, but this is a completely different test,” Thorpe commented in a recent statement. “Joining the LawConnect team is an opportunity to push myself, learn something new, and be part of an incredible Australian sporting tradition.”

LawConnect, recognized as one of the ultra-fast 100-foot supermaxis, is determined to uphold its winning streak after claiming victory in last year’s Sydney-Hobart race, a competition that was unfortunately overshadowed by the tragic loss of two sailors. As Thorpe embarks on this exciting new chapter, it highlights the seamless connection between aquatic sports and the rich heritage of maritime competition in Australia.
