Opposition Member Premila Kumar has expressed strong criticism towards the government’s decision to place Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa on leave during an ongoing investigation. Kumar labeled the move as hypocritical, emphasizing the inconsistency in the government’s actions.

She pointed out that while Dr. Nakarawa is being sidelined, Barbara Malimali continues in her role as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) despite a Commission of Inquiry being conducted regarding her controversial appointment. “The hypocrisy is undeniable,” Kumar stated, questioning the reasoning behind the government’s differing treatment of these two officials.

Mrs. Kumar highlighted that the situation is a matter of principle rather than just procedural fairness, urging the government to address its apparent double standards. She also criticized the government’s approach to key appointments, suggesting that political allies and past candidates are given positions without regard for merit and capability.
